A key part of the scheme is the development of Malling Brooks industrial estate to provide new premises for some of the business tenants currently located on the North Street Quarter development site.
One of these is John Gosnell and Co, the Lewes-based manufacturer of cosmetics and home fragrances. Known locally as “the soap factory”, John Gosnell has been in Lewes since the 1930s, when the company relocated from London to the Old Brewery site. In 1980 the factory moved to the Phoenix Industrial Estate, which is to be redeveloped as part of the North Street Quarter scheme. Now for the first time in its 340 year history, Gosnells is to have purpose built premises and is scheduled to move to Malling Brooks in early 2018.
The new factory is being constructed by Merit Holdings which specialises in building “clean manufacturing” premises for the cosmetic industry. The two storey, 20,000 square foot unit features sustainable elements to make it as energy efficient as possible.
These include solar panels and a “green” sedum roof planted with meadow grass and flowers. This cover of vegetation helps to manage water run-off and provides insulation.
The Malling Brooks construction site is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme. At the most recent monitoring of the site it was awarded “Excellent” for appearance, respect for the community and safety.
Residents living near to Malling Brooks are being kept up to date with the progress of the construction by Merit Holdings, the contractors. You can read the latest newsletter here.
