Jobs and flexible workspace for creative industries
The North Street Quarter will be a lively, mixed-use scheme, with flexible workspace and sustainable employment, ensuring the site is an economic success for the next 200 years.
We pride ourselves on developing high quality, sustainable and mixed development, where local communities and towns can continue to prosper well into the future. As part of our commitment to supporting the local economy, we are providing good quality workshop, office and retail spaces of differing sizes. These spaces will be flexible to support long-term business development and adapt as businesses grow and move on, or as new ones emerge in the community.
This will also address the employment provision requirement of the Lewes District Local Plan Joint Core Strategy. Workspace in the pedestrian streets and the public square will provide around 65,000 square feet of flexible workspace built to modern standards, most with multi planning. We will be encouraging and securing small-scale work places that can offer elements of small retail and public access, if that is part of their business.
Creating combined health facilities serving 26,000 patients, together with mixed housing such as extra care, will also sustain and encourage employment by freeing up other commercial buildings in the town, while the health facilities will be in a larger accessible space, allowing them to expand their range of services to the community.
In addition, the development of this area will enable 75,000 square feet of space for light industrial employment use to be created at the Malling Brooks Industrial Estate. Construction work is now underway, much of it to businesses who are moving from North Street.
The improvements on both of these sites can accommodate 475 full time equivalent registered jobs and 100 full time jobs will also be created in construction, with an apprenticeship scheme and emphasis on recruiting local people.
