One of the most important things other than affordable housing we heard from the consultation exercise was that the development had to fit in with the town. Our design teams have researched this in great detail and analysed the street patterns that give Lewes its character.
We will integrate the development into the fabric and character of the town. When you’re in North Street Quarter you will always know you’re in Lewes. Rather than carbon-copy designs, we have researched the architecture, social makeup and urban landscape of the town so we can design spaces that always feel like Lewes. Whilst respecting the rich heritage of Lewes it will create its own character informed by its unique topography, riverside location and contemporary requirements.
Here are some of the images and maps we’ve used, reflecting the concerns expressed and how our development can respond to them.
Character areas 958 KB
Three distinctive character areas have been defined across the site with each emphasising a different character through its use, density and layout, just as different areas in Lewes do so.
This document contains examples of how the three different character areas within the development draw inspiration from existing similar areas within Lewes’ existing urban fabric.
